Getting Married at the Marietta Courthouse

Not every wedding needs to be big or even traditional. It’s your wedding, so it’s your rules. For some couples, a courthouse wedding, a handful of photos, and a celebratory dinner is the perfect way to say “I do”. It’s easy, stress-free, and truly just meant for the two of you.

Recently, I photographed a couple who exchanged vows at the Marietta courthouse and then headed to a rooftop parking deck for portraits in the middle of winter. The result? Timeless, meaningful images that perfectly captured the day and told their story.

If you’re considering a courthouse wedding in Marietta, here’s everything you need to know.

Key Tips for Planning a Courthouse wedding

  • Get Your License First – Book your appointment with Probate Court (open Mon–Fri, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM) before the ceremony date.
  • Arrive Early – Plan to be at the courthouse at least 30 minutes before your chosen ceremony time.
  • Limit Your Guest List – Only four guests are allowed, so choose wisely.
  • Plan for Photos – Work with your photographer ahead of time to decide where portraits will happen after the ceremony.
  • Dress How You Want – Whether you imagine casual attire or a full wedding gown and suit, it’s your day.

The Rules for a Marietta Courthouse Wedding

Before you show up, here’s exactly what to expect:

  1. Ceremony Times – Weddings are offered twice daily: 12 PM and 6 PM. Arrive 30 minutes early, dressed and ready.
  2. No Changing Rooms – Come fully dressed, as there are no facilities available for changing.
  3. Marriage License Required – You must first obtain your marriage license at the Probate Court by appointment.
  4. Valid ID – A driver’s license or government-issued photo ID is required.
  5. What to Wear – Anything goes! Couples wear everything from casual clothes to full wedding attire with flowers in hand.
  6. Guests Allowed – Up to four guests may attend.
  7. Photography – Yes! Your photographer counts as one of your four guests.
  8. Cost – There is no fee for the courthouse ceremony.
  9. Witness Requirement – None needed!
  10. Group Ceremony – All ceremonies are done as group weddings; there are no private, individual ceremonies.
  11. No Appointment Needed – Just arrive on time. For questions, call the Magistrate Court: (770) 528–8906.

What a Courthouse Wedding Day Looks Like

The ceremony itself is short and sweet, officiated by a judge in a group setting. After a few kisses, hugs, and excited smiles, you’ll walk out officially married in less than 20 minutes.

From there, you have plenty of opportunities for portraits nearby:

  • the Downtown Marietta Square offers charming, historic backdrops.
  • Rooftop parking decks give you skyline views and a cinematic vibe.
  • Local parks or hidden side streets can make for intimate, quiet photos.

Ideas for Celebrating After Your Courthouse Ceremony

Your courthouse wedding doesn’t have to end at the courthouse. Many couples plan a relaxed celebration afterward, whether that’s:

  • A romantic dinner for two.
  • A brunch or early dinner with family.
  • A small private reception at a favorite restaurant.

For couples who want to include family and friends, I always recommend booking a private dining room at a local restaurant. For example, Wahoo Grill is one of my favorites—it offers private rooms, bartenders, delicious food served buffet-style, and enough space for dancing if you want to extend the celebration.

If you’re considering a Marietta courthouse wedding and possibly looking for a reception party idea, know that it can be easy, stress free and just as timeless, emotional, and document worthy as any big celebration. With the right preparation (and a photographer to capture it), your courthouse ceremony will be a day you’ll never forget.
